Winning the Game of Life

Winning in the game of life

Is something we must do,

If we want to be with our Lord

When this game is through.

Winning isn’t everything

Is what they sometimes say,

But really winning is what matters

In this game we play.

Winning on this earth

Gets you recognition from man,

But being a winner for the Lord

Is something that few people understand.

It doesn’t get you a trophy, medal, or ring

It gives the prize of heaven

Which is out of them all, the greatest thing.

So how do we win

This spiritual game?

We look at what Christ did

And try to do the same.

The game is very hard

You don’t have and easy road ahead.

But when you mess up simply look to Christ

For that’s why His blood was shed.

So when your game clock strikes zero

And your life on earth is done

Can you look at God on that day

And say the game of life I’ve won.

Richard Dawkins vs. John Lennox

http://www.fixed-point.org/index.php/video/35-full-length/164-the-dawkins-lennox-debate

This is a great debate on Richard Dawkins' book The God Delusion. It's really long, and I'm sure most of you will not want to watch the whole thing, but it contains a lot of great information. Richard Dawkins and John Lennox are two professors at Oxford University, and they both do a great job at presenting their case. Please let us know what you think.

Today is the Day

Today is the day. Today is the day that you and I decide to make a change. Today is the day that you and I decide to win the fight. Temptations are something that are around us daily. Nothing has ever changed when it comes to temptations. We even read about how Christ was tempted in Matthew 4. Christ was tempted in all the same ways we are today. The difference is He knew how to overcome these temptations and win the battle against the devil. The fact that we are tempted will never change. We, however; can decide to make a change in the ways we handle these temptations. Everyone has their own "big" temptations. One temptation may not at all be a problem for one person but then it may be the downfall of another person. Everyone has their own struggles. I think it is time we started to do something about this. We are a people who always make excuses and say, "we'll that's just something I struggle with." Why does it have to be this way. Why don't we decide right here and right now that we are not going to struggle with this anymore. We constantly pray to God to help us with our struggles and temptations in life and He always comes through for us. Why don't we decided that today is the day we hold up our end of the bargain. Why don't we decide that we aren't going to let the devil beat us anymore. We need to remember those words of the Bible that say, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Philippians 4:13. Also we read in Romans 8:31 it says, "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?" We need to keep these scriptures in mind when dealing with temptations and use them and the rest of God's word to help us overcome and win the battle against the devil. Today is the day we stop making excuses about what we can and can't do and rely on God, lean on his everlasting arm, and trust in His word. So I give you this challenge and in doing so I challenge myself also. Trust in him, believe in him. He is always their to help you through your struggle, now it is time you do your part.

Evolution: True of False?

In today's society, evolution is no longer recognized as a theory, but a fact. Richard Goldschmidt says, "Evolution of the animal and plant world is considered by all those entitled to a judgement to be a fact for which no further proof is needed." J. Savage adds, "No serious biologist today doubts the fact of evolution... The fact of evolution is clear." Is that true? Does evolution really have enough facts that no further proof is needed? Daniel Dennett (atheist philosopher) sure thinks so. He once said this concerning parents who teach their kids anything other than evolution, "Those of us who have freedom of speech will feel free to describe your teachings as falsehoods, and will attempt to demonstrate this to your children at our earliest opportunity." Not only do atheists believe that evolution is the truth, but they believe it so much, that they are willing to tell your children that you are a liar for teaching them anything else. Let's take a look at some of these "facts" that evolution proclaims to be true, and you can just decide for yourself who is lying.

1: The English Peppered Moth. The English peppered moth is what many claim to be proof for evolution. Let me explain. Back before the industrial revolution, English peppered moths were 95% light colored, and 5% dark colored. After the industrial revolution, when chemicals darkened the tree trunks, English peppered moths became 95% dark colored, and 5% light colored. The theory goes, once the tree trunks became dark colored, English peppered moths evolved to being dark colored so they could blend in with the trees and protect themselves from predators. Many science books have pictures of these moths on tree trunks to show you just exactly what they mean. (I have a few of these pictures on PowerPoint.) This is what many claim to be proof for evolution, some even say the best evidence that they have. So what's the problem? Well, you might find this interesting. English peppered moths do not land on tree trunks. They have been studied for over forty years, and they have only ever seen two land on tree trunks, and that was at night. So how did they get pictures with them on tree trunks? Great question. They artificially put them there. Why would they do that, and why are these pictures in our schools' textbooks? Bob Ritter, a Canadian textbook writer who knew the pictures were fake but still used them, says this "You have to look at the audience. How convoluted do you want to make it for a first time learner?" "We just want to get across the idea of selective adaptation. Later on they can look at the work more critically." Wow. How many of you knew that your textbooks are lying to you? But it's okay, they're just trying to make easier for all of us first time learners. Later, they will let us look at it more critically. Well, when is later? This same drawing is used in many college textbooks. Are we supposed to get our doctorate degree in biology before the evolutionists can tell us that they lied to us?

2. Ernst Haeckel. As soon as Charles Darwin's book The Origin of Species was published in 1859, Ernst Haeckel became an immediate fan. He loved the idea of evolution, and he wanted to do anything he could to help prove this theory. So he came up with the idea of "Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny". This basically means that every creature goes through its evolutionary stage while it is being born. He proved this by his drawings. If you look at them, you will notice that in the first stages of life, humans look exactly like a fish, pig, rabbit, etc. This was considered proof that we all came from a common ancestor. So what's the problem? Well, the drawings are fake. A scientist who studied embryos told Haeckel that his drawings didn't even resemble what the embryos really looked like, and the theory was a bust. That was back in the 1860's. Why is this interesting? Haeckel's drawings are still being used in textbooks as proof for evolution! Here are just a few schools and school systems who use science books that proclaim Haeckel's drawings as proof for evolution; University of Western Florida, South Huntington school district, NY, University of Tennessee Martin, Central Michigan University. Stephen Jay Gould (atheist) had this to say on the subject, "“Haeckel remains most famous today as the chief architect and propagandist for a famous argument that science disproved long ago but that popular culture has never fully abandoned." “We do, I think, have the right to be both astonished and ashamed by the century of mindless recycling that has led to the persistence of those drawings in a large number, if not the majority, of modern textbooks.”

3. Eohippus. The Eohippus or the "dawn horse" is a small creature, about the size of a Boston Terrier. It is also the supposed first stage in horse evolution. If you have ever been to the American Museum of Natural History, you will have seen about a 200 thousand dollar exhibit of horse evolution. What's the problem? That's right. It's fake. Heribert-Nilsson said "The family tree of the horse is beautiful and continuous only in the textbooks." Stephen Jay Gould said this, “Once ensconed in textbooks, misinformation becomes cocooned and effectively permanent, because, as stated above, textbooks copy from previous texts. (I have written two essays on this lamentable practice: one on the amusingly perennial description of the eohippus, or “dawn horse” as the size of a fox terrier, even though most authors, including yours truly, have no idea of the dimensions or appearance of the breed.”

You want to know what bothers me about Gould's statement? He considers the description of the dawn horse as amusing. He thinks this is funny. He thinks it's just a big joke. Well, I'm sorry, but I don't think this is a joke. Why? Because this is exactly the kind of misinformation that atheist like Daniel Dennett use to tell children that their parents are liars. Call me a stick in the mud, but I just can't find the humor in that.

Spiritual Playmakers

You will often hear a sports announcer say when a player makes a big play in a game that “they called on his number and he came through.” If a player is on the sidelines in a football game and the coach yells at him to get in most of the time he will jump up and run into the game. That is unless the kid is just playing to “wear the uniform,” as we sometimes say, in which he is a little worried about having to play. He just wants to sit on the sidelines and look good and let the other players make things happen. We can’t be like this in our Christian lives. We can’t become a Christian just to “wear the uniform”, we have to be playmakers. It is the players that are out on the field making plays to help the team win that get remembered. Do you want to be remembered? When it comes down to the judgment day do you want God to say “…Well done they good and faithful servant…” (Matthew 25:21) or do you want to hear God say “…I never knew you: depart from me…” (Matthew 7:23). I think all would like to hear the first one. So as you and I walk through our daily lives we should think about something; are we simply wearing the Christian uniform, or are we being playmakers and soul winners for God? And do you want to be remembered? Not necessarily by man, but by God himself on that Day of Judgment. Matthew 16:27 “For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.”

But What About Evolution ?

In my last post, I discussed how we could prove that God did exist. That brings up the question: What about evolution? Ever since high school, I have always been told that evolution is a fact. In today's society, people will look down on you, even call you names, just for not believing in evolution. Richard Dawkins, a biology professor at Oxford University said, "It is absolutely safe to say that if you meet someone who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid, or insane. (or wicked, but I'd rather not consider that.)" So is evolution true? Can evolution really explain everything in the universe? No it can't. As a matter of fact, I am going to discuss two topics that evolution will never be able to explain. (Even though it may claim that it can.)
1. The beginning of the universe: How did this universe begin? Evolution claims that around 14.7 billion years ago, a tiny ball of matter, that derived from literally nothing, exploded. Expansion then took over, and this caused everything that we see now. There are a lot of problems with this theory, including a lack of evidence, but I don't really have enough time to discuss all of them. So I am just going to discuss the main issue here; How does something come from nothing? I don't know a whole lot about science, other than what little I've read, but I just don't understand how, in a material world, something can just magically appear out of nothing. That just doesn't make sense to me. What makes even less sense, is the fact that so many people believe that it can. Some may say, "These scientists have doctorate degrees, shouldn't we believe them?". That is true, most of the them do. So does my math professor. But if he ever tells me that 2+2=5, I'm not gonna buy it. I don't care what kind of degree he has. The fact of the matter is that nothing can come from nothing. It just can't happen. Those who believe in evolution believe with all of the hearts that it can; and we're the ignorant ones?
2. The Law of Biogenesis: The law of biogenesis simply states that life only forms from previous life of its own kind. In other words, life cannot form from non-life. Evolution claims that it can. Evolution states that a long time ago there was a warm chemical soup on the planet. That soup was struck by lightening, and this caused the first building blocks of life. Even though there is no evidence to support this theory, most atheists will claim this is exactly how we were created. Many will say that they know it for a fact. That's funny. Let me explain why: Robert Hazen is one of the most credentialed scientist on the planet. He received his doctorate degree in earth science from Harvard University. He is a research scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington Geophysical Laboratory. He is also a member of ISSOL (International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life). Only 500 scientists in the world are members of ISSOL. He done a lecture series on how life formed here on this planet. You might find some of his comments pretty interesting. He starts off by saying, "This course is unusual, because at this point, there is so much that we don't know about life here on earth." He then says, "The origin of life is a subject of immense complexity, and I have to tell you right up front, we don't know how life began." "How can I tell you about the origin of life when are so woefully ignorant of that history?" Here is one of the smartest scientist on the planet, who has devoted over ten years of his life to nothing other than the origin of life on this planet, and he still has no idea how it got here. So yeah, it's pretty funny when some 20 year old kid (or a professor at Oxford University for that matter) tries to tell me that I'm stupid for not believing in evolution.
You may be saying, if all of this is true, than why does so many people believe in evolution? That's a great question. The answer is, because so many people don't really examine evolution carefully. They just believe everything that they hear, and sometimes what they hear, are nothing but lies and misinformation. In my next post, I am going to discuss all of the misinformation that Darwinists try and make you believe. I think you will find some of it to be pretty interesting.

Putting On The Armor

Life is full of temptations. From the age of 4 to the age of 74 temptations are always around us in our everyday lives. Some bigger than others, but they are always there. The key is how we handle these temptations as we face them. Do we take them head on and conquer them or do we give in and let the devil get the best of us? Granted everyone will give in every once in a while because we are human and humans make mistakes. Romans 3:23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Does that mean it is ok to sin, of course not. Romans 6:1-2What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? We will sin yes but we must repent from those sins. As I have grown older in my life temptations have yet to get any easier. I often told myself when I was younger in my teen years that if I could just get through these hard times then things would be easier. I couldn’t have been any more wrong. I was still faced with temptations everyday and some harder than the ones from the day before. So how do we face these temptations? We must face them with God’s word. We must know how God feels on certain issues and we must act in a way that shows we feel the same way God does. As a college student the people I am around influence me and my decisions as I go through life. It is hard to be strong on a certain sinful issue when you’re the only one in a group not doing it. It would be much easier if we just gave in and went along with the crowd. You and I both know that we can’t please God and go along with a sinful crowd at the same time. So what is a person to do? Mark 9:43-48And if the hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. As you can tell if God would want us to cut off a limb of our body if it were to cause us to go to hell then I believe he would want us to cut off that friend or group that brings us down and into earthly sin. For if we stay with that friend or group and get brought down we will feel the fire that is never quenched. So how do we face these temptations? My college roommate (my freshman year) and I had a verse we went to often when we were having a problem, Ephesians 6:13Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. The verses following go on to describe this armor of God. We must girt our lions with truth, have the breastplate of righteousness, have our feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, take the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and take the sword of the spirit. If we put on this armor everyday there is no way we can be defeated. No matter what temptation we face we can win. So how do we beat temptation, we put on that armor of God and take it head on. We may not win every battle but when life is over and we stand before God on that judgment day, we will have won the war.

Just Plain Common Sense

Does God exist? Yes, he does. The book of Genesis explains to us very clearly that there is a God, and that he created the universe in six days. The skeptic will disagree. The skeptic will say that I have no proof for this claim. I do have proof. As a matter of fact, I will show that all I really need is just a little bit of common sense.
What is my proof? How can I use common sense to prove that God really does exists? Well, let me explain. Let's say you come over to my house, and you see a painting on my wall that you really like. You then ask me, "Who painted it?". I say to you, "Nobody. I just got home one day, and that painting was just sitting there." Would you believe that? Of course you wouldn't. Because we all know that if something is designed, it obviously had to have had a designer. Hopefully, nobody would disagree with that. This is common sense. So, if I could prove to you without a shadow of a doubt that the universe we live in was designed, you would have to admit that it had a designer. I don't see how anyone could disagree with that.
So is the universe designed? Yes, it is. How can I prove this? By using the Anthropic Principle. The Anthropic Principle is the mounting evidence that has many scientists believing that the universe is extremely fine-tuned (designed) to support human life here on Earth. Let's look at some of the Anthropic Constants.
Anthropic Constant 1: Oxygen level. The oxygen level on earth is at 25 percent. If it were altered in anyway, life on earth would be impossible. Anthropic Constant 2: Jupiter. If Jupiter was not in its current orbit, the earth would be bombarded with space material, and life on earth would be impossible. Anthropic Constant 3: Gravity. If the gravitational force were altered by .00000000000000000000000000000000001 percent, life on earth would be impossible. If these three constants aren't proof that the universe was designed, I don't know what is. But it just so happens that these three aren't the only constants in the Anthropic Principle. Actually, there are 122 of them. What are the chances that all of these constants could have occurred by chance, without design? Astrophysicist Hugh Ross has calculated that the probability is once in every 10 raised to the 138. That's the number 10 with 138 zeros behind it.
There is absolutely no way that anyone who has looked at all the facts could say that this universe was not designed. As we have already stated, anything that is designed must have had a designer. So based off of what we just saw, we can establish that the universe had to have had a designer. It's just plain common sense.

The Fight in a Man

You will often hear coaches, fight trainers, and motivational speakers alike use the phrase; “It’s not the man in the fight but it’s the fight in the man.” We as Christians can find a lot of truth in this statement as we go through our spiritual lives. We will all face spiritual fights as we go through our lives and we need to be prepared to take them on and overcome them. Let’s look at life as a fight. We train for this fight before we are buried in baptism and become a child of God. We must learn what we need to win the fight of life. Granted we won’t learn everything in training. Some things we won’t figure out till after we’ve been in the fight a few rounds and we have seen what our opponent has to throw at us. However, we do learn the basic things we need to win in training so that we will have a firm foundation and not wavier when we take shots from our opponent. Now as we train we aren’t going to jump right in and know everything. We must learn to walk before we can run so to speak. We must listen to those who have been in the fight for a while because they know the lumps that we will take. Proverbs 12:1 “Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.” We must learn from our mistakes in training so we will hopefully be less likely to make them when we start the fight. Our spiritual fight begins the moment we come out of the watery grave of baptism. It is from then on that we must begin to try to bring others to Christ and his word. No one said the fight would be an easy one, few fights are, but with our Heavenly Father in our corner we can know that we will always be able to get back up whenever we fall. Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." We must know though, that once we start this fight there is no turning back and no throwing in the towel. 2 Peter 2:21 "For it has been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them." When we start this fight we must go 100% every round. Of course we will get tired and at times it may seem that no matter what we do we cannot win. Our opponent will often times seem to fierce for us to be able to take on. But we must always remember Romans 8:31 "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?" With the Lord on our side, no opponent, great or small, can bring us down. We will fight day in and day out because we know that when the final bell sounds and the fight is over we may not be champion of the world but, we can know that we will receive a much greater prize. A prize that only our Lord can give us. Matthew 16:27 "For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works."

"Why waltz with a guy for 10 rounds if you can knock him out in one?" -Rocky Marciano. Don't dance with the devil. You have the tools(the Word, fellow Christians, and prayer) to fight off temptations and Win the Fight.

Why Do I Believe in God?

Why do I believe in God? I remember the very first time I asked myself that question. I was around twelve years old, laying in bed late at night, and the thought just hit me. I mean, my parents have always told me that there was a God, but how could I know for sure? How could I know that they weren't mistaken? I had never heard any good reason to believe in God outside of the bible. God had never talked to me. I had asked God to let me see a miracle so that I could believe, but he never did. As far as I was concerned, there wasn't one good reason for me to believe in God, or anything supernatural for that matter. It was a very scary thought. I didn't like it. But it was there, and I couldn't get rid of it.
I struggled with that thought for years. When I was sixteen, I finally put the thought behind me. I was at a christian youth camp (Camp Wiregrass) when I finally decided that there just had to be a God. I saw so many young people worshiping God with all their hearts. I could feel the emotion for myself, and I just knew that this "God thing" had to be legit. I was baptized into Christ later that year for the remission of my sins, and I put all my worry and doubt of God's existence behind me for good. Or so I thought.
It wasn't until after I graduated from high school and was getting prepared to start my adult life when the question struck me again. Why do I believe in God? The doubt had taken its a game to a whole new level. Now I was old enough to understand the theory of Evolution, and that most scientists believed it to be a fact. Now I understood that there are many other religions out in the world, and that the followers of those religions believe that there religion is true, just like I do. What gave me the right to believe that I was right and they were wrong? What really hit me the hardest, was the matter of Hell. I knew what God commanded us to do in order to go to Heaven, and based off my own personal observations, I came to the conclusion that about 9 out of 10 people, including many of my loved ones, weren't living the way God had commanded. Did this mean that around 90 percent of people on earth, including people I loved dearly, were going to Hell? I just didn't want to believe that. As a matter of fact, I refused to believe that. If God loved us so much, why would he allow that to happen? What gave God the right to send so many people, including some who I would consider to be really good people, to an eternity of torment? These are the kinds of questions that I could not seem to get out of my head, and once again, my faith had been rattled.
I finally decided that it was time for me to make a decision. I wasn't going to play the fence any longer. Was I going to believe in the God of the Bible or not? I started investigating for myself. I wasn't to going to shy away from things like evolution anymore. I was going to study it, with an open mind, and see what kind of facts that it really had. I was going to do more in depth studies of the bible to see if it really would prevail as the inspired word of God. I was going to take to look at history to see if the bible's accounts of Jesus really were true. So what did I find?
In all the research that I have done, I have come away with the conclusion that the God of the bible is the one true God. I don't understand how anyone who has taken a look at all the evidence could come away with anything else. Over the next few weeks, I am going to be answering the question, "Why do I believe in God?". I am going to discuss why evolution is a theory and not a fact, and I am going to inform you why some of your science text books lie to you. I am also going to talk about how we know that Jesus Christ really did live on this earth 2,000 years ago, and how we can know for sure that the bible is 100 percent accurate. The goal of this discussion is to help you grow in your faith, and to better equip you to defend the reason for what you believe in (1 Peter 3:15). I am going to do my best to explain these topics in a way that a college or high school student can really understand. If you would like to study these topics on your own at a higher level, I would suggest that you visit www.apologeticspress.org. If you have any questions or comments, please let me know, and I will do my best to answer them. - Colton

Let's Go to Work

Sports are something that I have always been around. I have been involved with some sort of sports team since I was 5 years old and, as a pursue a career in coaching, I hope to be around sports for a very long time. I believe that athletics have taught me many lessons that help me through my daily life. From little league to my current position as the manager of the UNA baseball team I have continued to learn more and more about the game itself and how to deal with certain issues. For example: pain, loss, victory, perseverance, struggle, etc. All of these things I have encountered at one time or another through athletics. I have also used sports as a parallel with my Christian life. All the things found in the list above are often also found in the character traits of a Christian. I have told you this so that you will know how many of my posts will be set-up. I believe there are life lessons to be learned through athletics and I think that those same life lessons can be implemented into our daily Christian walk. So now that you know this, here is my first post:

Virginia Tech's football team has a tradition. It is the tradition of the lunch pail. This old metal lunch pail with VT painted on the side is given to the hardest working defensive player each week for him to hold on too. The lunch pail symbolizes the Hokies blue-collar approach to the game and it is seen as a "badge of honor" by the players. Everyone wants that lunch pail. If you have possession of the lunch pail but you get out worked, then you lose the right to carry it and it goes over to the other player. The pail represents the fact that the players are going to have to "carry their lunch with them" because they are going to work. In our Christian walk we also have a badge of honor that we can carry...The Cross. If you look in the book of Matthew 16:24 it says, "Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." Also Mark 10:21 says, "Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing though lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me." And finally, Luke 9:23 says, "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." We see from these three passages that we are commanded to take up our cross and follow Christ. Now, different from the lunch pail, more than one person at a time can carry this cross but, a person can't carry it if he is not willing to work. A true Christian must be willing to "go to work" day in and day out for the Lord and fight for his truth. So I close my first post with this challenge to you...Take up your cross and follow the Lord, not just in faith, but also in works like we read about in James 2. LET'S GO TO WORK FOR THE LORD AND HIS TRUTH.
-Ben Stevenson

Taking a Stand

We (Colton Scott and Ben Stevenson) are trying to get the word out about taking a stand for the truth, the word, and the Lord. We have completely different backgrounds but have some goals in common:
  1. Get to heaven
  2. Bring as many people to the Lord as we can along the way
This blog comes from the perspective of college students but is for those of any age. There have been polls across America that show that the majority of U.S. citizens believe in the one true God. Yet, it seems that the minority are the ones with the loudest voice. This blog is designed to battle against the skeptic and let the truth of God's word ring out. Since we come from different backgrounds we will be talking on an assortment of different topics. Hopefully we will be posting things that can help you out in any situation you may encounter. We believe that the voice of the Christian has been silent for too long and that it is time we step up and TAKE A STAND.
